As you would expect in a Schafer game, the dialogue is hilarious and leaves us with a lot of characters to remember. Much of the blame lies with the secondary characters that populate the Broken Age universe, who add interest and complexity to an apparently simple story.

On paper it sounds a bit hackneyed, but at Double Fine they know how to get a slice of it through a script that dazzles from the start and that knows how to escape the clichés. Although we can jump from one to another at any time (which is quite relaxing when we get stuck), deep down we are witnessing the same story from two complementary points of view.
Two characters who start out thinking only of themselves and who mature as they interfere in the situation of the world around them. The graphic adventure with which Tim Schafer returns to the genre that enshrined him is, as you can guess, the story of the “coming of age” of Vella and Shay. Shay lives in a spaceship, overprotected by a central computer that does not allow him to give way to instincts that demand risk and adventure. Vella is about to undergo a maturity ritual that will mean sacrificing herself so that the monster Mog Chothra does not annihilate her entire village, even though she begins to think that they should try to fight him. It is such a particular expression that it is used to describe a whole genre about the emotional growth of its protagonists: The Guardian in the Rye or the recent Boyhood would fall into this category.īroken Age begins with two teenagers sleeping in separate worlds: Vella and Shay. It is something more than the legal age of majority, it is that moment when you look in the mirror and realize that you have changed, that you have matured, and the rest of the world begins to realize it. “Coming of age” defines that moment in which a person leaves adolescence and moves towards adulthood. As soon as I finished the last Double Fine game, one of these expressions came to mind. The player can freely switch between their stories, helping them take control of their own lives, and dealing with the unexpected adventures that follow. Vella Tartine and Shay Volta are two teenagers in strangely similar situations, but radically different worlds. Broken Age is a timeless coming-of-age story of barfing trees and talking spoons.
